Rev. Nicholls Marking 25 Years as Catholic Priest

The Rev. Trevor Nicholls will mark the 25th anniversary of his ordination as a Catholic priest on Jan. 13. A celebration is planned at St. Catharine‘s Church at the 10.00am Mass this Sunday, Jan. 11. All are invited to attend the liturgy and a brunch afterwards in the Parish Center. Anyone planning to attend the brunch is asked to call the Rectory at 738-1491 by 2:00pm this Friday, Jan. 9.

Father Nicholls has been full time as Parochial Vicar at St. Catharine’s since Sept 1, 2014. Prior to that he served as President of Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx. He was ordained 25 years ago by Cardinal John O’Çonnor at St. Joseph’s Seminary under a Vatican provision that permitted Anglican/Episcopal priests to be received into the Catholic church and after a period of preparation and discernment to be ordained Catholic priests. He and his wife Marion are the parents of four and the grandparents of nine.

The Rev. Trevor Nicholls is retiring this month after five years at St. Catharine's Church in Pelham where he and his wife Marion have become beloved members of the parish community.

A farewell reception is planned on Sunday, Oct. 27, following the 10 AM Mass.

Father Nicholls marked the 25th anniversary of his ordination as a Catholic priest on Jan. 13, 2015. He had been an Anglican/Episcopal priest in the London area and came to the United States in 1988 to teach and to become ordained as a Roman Catholic priest. A Vatican provision permits Anglican/Episcopal priests to be received into the Catholic church after a period of preparation and discernment and to be ordained Catholic priests.

Father Nicholls. 76. has been a full time Parochial Vicar at St. Catharine’s since Sept 1, 2014. Prior to that he served as President of Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx.

At St. Catharine's, he and his wife of 51 years have resided in the Rectory and he calls himself the "priest in residence" because he carries out pastoral duties but administrative duties are handled by the Rev. Robert DeJulio, Pastor of OLPH-St. Catharine's, the merged parish. Father Nicholls and his wife will be retiring to a home in Goshen, NY (Orange County) where he taught at a Catholic high school for 15 years.

During his time at St. Catharine's, Father Nicholls oversees daily Mass and two Saturday/Sunday Masses with the assistance of visiting priests as needed. In addition, he has funerals and other pastoral care duties. No announcement has been made about his replacement. His wife Marion has been working in the parish office at St. Catharine's.

St. Catharine's has almost 500 families registered although Father Nicholls said that, like other churches, attendance at Sunday Mass has declined and at St. Catharine's averages 275-300 people. However, he said class numbers for First Communion and Confirmation students remain high, and the classes are held at St. Catharine's.

St. Catharine's has coffee after the 10 AM Sunday Mass, a Bible Study group, a Prayer group and a Men's group.

St. Catharine's Church is located at 25 Second Avenue, Pelham.

He and his wife Marion are the parents of four and the grandparents of ten.
