Greta Thelwell Facey, a long-time resident of Pelham, died on January 20, 2019 in the Bronx, NY after a brief battle with cancer. She was 87 years old.
Mrs. Facey was born in 1932 in Manhattan into a family of five to Alfred Reginald and Maude Thelwell, both Jamaican Immigrants. Greta attended Hunter College and CCNY and received both a BA and MSE degree. She was also chosen as Valedictorian of her graduating class. On May 28, 1960, she married Eric Frank Facey at the Church of the Good Neighbor in Manhattan.
Mrs. Facey was a firm believer in formal education, and became an elementary school teacher in the New York City schools, where she taught for 26 years. Greta found her career very gratifying with three nominations for Teacher of the Year award and was selected to Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America in 1974 and 1975. She retired from the NYC public school system in 1980.
Ms. Facey lived in Pelham for the last 44 years and prior to that for 15 years in Mt. Vernon. She is survived by her sister Geraldine, her two loving sons Eric and John, two beloved granddaughters Erica and Mia, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her two brothers Rafael and Donald, and her loving husband Eric Frank Facey. Mrs. Facey was very active in her community as well as a longtime and active member of the Presbyterian Church of New Rochelle. Membership at PCNR was her life anchor where she found invaluable spiritual and growth opportunities that were cherished. Greta had been a deacon and elder and served on the finance committee.
As per her wishes, there are no funeral services planned. A memorial service in her honor is scheduled for Saturday, March 23 at 11AM at the Presbyterian Church of New Rochelle located at 50 Pintard Ave, New Rochelle, N.Y. 10801. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Presbyterian Church of New Rochelle at the aforementioned address.
