Catherine Urso, mother of two longtime residents of Pelham, died on Dec.ember 19, 2019, at The Wartburg assisted living community in Mt. Vernon. She was 94 years old.

Mrs. Urso is survived by three daughters, Ann Murray of Pelham, Cecilia Joven of Middletown, Rhode Island, and Ginny Curtin of Washington, DC; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was born and spent most of her life in Brooklyn, NY, moving to the Wartburg in 2002 with Tony, her husband of 68 years who died in 2011.

"Mama Urso" was fiercely devoted to her family, becoming a grandmother at age 42 and a great-grandmother at age 72. An expert seamstress, she loved hosting big family dinners, watching classic movies and shopping for deals at Costco. She was the one you visited when you had good news to share. Friends and family took regular turns sitting at her kitchen table, talking and drinking tea, or wine, or Scotch.

She “stitched our family together with love, determination, sass, laughter, and delicious Italian cooking” one granddaughter posted on Facebook. “I’ll work every day to continue her legacy of family, food and love,” wrote another.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Pelham.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
