Thomas Francis Cooney of the Baptist Homes in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and formerly of North Kingstown, Rhode Island and Pelham Manor, passed away on October 24, 2019. He was 84 years old.

Thomas was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on February 4, 1935. He moved with his family to Secor Lane in Pelham as a child, and went to Siwanoy School and Pelham Memorial High School. He graduated from Harvard College in 1956 and then served as an officer in the Marine Corps for three years. Following that, he worked in advertising and graphic arts until his retirement in 2000.

Thomas was predeceased by his wife of thirty-eight years, Patricia P. Cooney. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Doug Reynolds; his son Tiff and his wife Marta; his son, Michael and his wife, Vivian; grandsons Samuel and Caleb Reynolds, and granddaughters Siena and Alessandra Cooney. He was the brother of Brenda Dunne of Fishkill, NY, Gerald Cooney of CA, and Betsy Cooney Kemble of Westerly, RI. His siblings, Janet Cooney Thompson and Everett Cooney, predeceased him. He is also survived by two generations of nieces and nephews.

Tom was good at grilling steaks, refinishing furniture, telling stories, and beginning in 1982, getting sober. He was less good at receiving gifts (he preferred giving), and not cheating at Trivial Pursuit. His fondness for Mallomar Cookies necessitated an annual winter airlift from various relatives who live in the tri-state area. He was a student of American history, particularly that of the American Revolution and the Founding Fathers, and a lifelong Republican who voted Democrat in the last three presidential elections. He hoped that civility would soon return to public discourse.

A memorial service will be held in the future. Memorial contributions should be made to the Baptist Homes, in memory of Thomas F. Cooney, 489 Castle Shannon Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15234.
