To The Editor:
We are writing to express our enthusiastic support for Madeline Smith for the Pelham Board of Education. Madeline has been an excellent School Board member for the past three years and it is not only Pelham residents who have noticed Madeline’s dedication and skill. Just last month, the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) named Madeline this year’s Advocate of the Year for her service and dedication to public education! In bestowing this honor, NYSSBA specifically pointed to Madeline’s extensive committee responsibilities for the Board, including being Chairperson for the Engagement and Outreach Committee, which resulted in the creation and implementation of monthly school board “coffees,” started electronic invitations inviting members of the community to all Board meetings, and implemented surveys to assess the needs and concerns of parents.
Madeline also: (1) co-founded and chaired the Advocacy Committee which spearheaded five letter writing campaigns to Albany regarding improving NYS Math & ELA Assessments, saying no to mandatory field testing, giving us back our GEA (State Aid), protecting student/data privacy, and improving the APPR; (2) was appointed Chair of the Excellence & Equity Committee which facilitated the recommendation for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme at PMS, the addition of five new STEAM courses (Computer Science 1, Robotics, Architectural Design, 21st Century Technologies and Literacies, and the Science of Coaching), and the addition of Mandarin to our foreign language program; and (3) has been, for three years, a member of the Finance Committee, which kept taxes at or below the tax cap all three years.
Pelham is lucky to have had Madeline dedicate her experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm as an integral member of the Pelham School Board for these past three years. We encourage all Pelham voters to join us on May 19, 2015 in re-electing Madeline Smith to the Pelham School Board so that she can continue the excellent job she has done for all students of Pelham.
