Pelham's Varsity hockey team kicks off the season tonight, Nov. 27 with a game against Carmel.
Looking ahead, the team is already preparing for the game against is against Mamaroneck in January which is poised to be a competitive revenge game after Pelham's loss last year.
Two years ago the PMHS Varsity hockey team won the state championship, but last year's team had a rough season after having lost many seniors. After that 7-11-3 record, this year's team is excited to get back on track and make a push to the playoffs even with only four returning starters, Liam Ronan in goal, Andrew Shulzenko and Christian Morfit at forward, and defense-man Connor Evans.
Coach Ed Witz is entering this season with high expectations for his players, “Work hard, play as a team, and sacrifice to win,” Coach Witz said. He also said the team's speed and goal-tending are two of the most important attributes of this year's team. One thing that the team is working on is team offense, as the team has been defense first. Coach Witz said his goal is for the team to capture the section title and possibly go on to the states.
