The Swim Across America Long Island Sound chapter kicked off its summer fundraising season at the NYAC Travers Island in Pelham Manor on July 12 with 55 swimmers raising over $60,000 for local cancer research, prevention and treatment.

Proceeds from the swim will support the Swim Across America Laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, pediatric oncology research at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian and patient services with Westchester-based Cancer Support Team.

The Gene Culligan Award, which is given annually to an individual who has shown tremendous dedication to the SAA NYAC swim, was given to Lily Solmssen Moureaux, a local photo archivist and photographer. Ms. Moureaux has participated in the SAA-LIS swim at the NYAC since 2006 in memory of her late husband, Ghislain F.L. Moureaux, who waged a brave battle against prostate cancer.
