Donatella Versace Demonstrates on the 25 Years While Her Brother Gianni’s Murder
Despite her best efforts, Donatella Versace is still grieving the loss of her brother Gianni.
On the 25th anniversary of Gianni’s death, Donatella shared a series of throwback images of the two of them, including one in black and white. She wrote on Instagram, “25 years of missing you, Gianni.” It breaks my heart to think of how much I miss you every day.
Andrew Cunanan, a serial killer, shot Gianni to death outside his infamous Miami Beach estate on July 15, 1997, as he walked to a nearby cafe to buy an Italian newspaper. He had reached the age of fifty.
The Versace founder was in Paris just a few days before his death, launching a new collection
Antonio D’Amico, Gianni’s boyfriend, raced outdoors when he heard the gunshots. When Dateline interviewed him about the murder in 2017, he said, “My heart just stopped.” Gianni was lying in a pool of his own blood on the steps when I escaped.
Donatella and her brother Santo Versace flew from Milan to Miami as soon as they learned of Gianni’s death. She relived his murder twenty years later.
Even though she had the world’s attention following the murder of her brother, Donatella told The Guardian in 2017 that “99% of the people assumed I wouldn’t survive,” she said. “Maybe that’s what I thought, too. My entire universe had come crashing down around me when my brother became king.”
Donatella took over the fashion business
Gianni died in 2004, and Donatella took over the fashion business he had built. She was named chief designer and vice president, a position she holds today as the Versace Group’s most prominent member.
Donatella Versace dedicated her spring 2018 Versace collection to her late brother in 2017, telling Vogue at the time that it took two decades because it was so difficult “It was too upsetting to contemplate it before. After a twenty-year hiatus, I felt ready.”
