During the Siege of Sarajevo in April 1992, she was forced to evacuate Bosnia. Yugoslavia’s disintegration triggered the war. Until December 1995, there was a bloodbath.

Jenkins spent more than a year as a refugee in Croatia before making his way to London, England. She was able to resume her studies at City University in London after a two-year hiatus. Diana wisely chose mathematics as her major because numbers may be understood without knowing English. She went on to get a BSc in Computer Science and Economics (with honours).

Many of her fellow Yugoslavian immigrants were granted permanent citizenship around this time, but Diana was given permanent citizenship due to her excellent academic record and the fact that she had never requested for government assistance.
