Debbie and Marshall moved back and forth between Michigan and Missouri after their divorce, never staying in one spot for more than a year and relying on family members to support them. Marshall was a loner as a kid who was constantly bullied at school. They lived in a mostly black Detroit neighborhood during his teenage years.

Eminem wanted to be a comic book artist at first, but that changed after hearing his first rap song, Reckless – Featuring Ice-T, from the soundtrack of the film “Breakin’.” Ronnie, his half-brother, had given him the album.

He began rapping as “M&M” at the age of 14. (based on his initials). He left high school at the age of 17. He worked a variety of odd jobs while writing songs and competing in local freestyle rap contests.

Around this time, he began to go by the moniker “Slim Shady,” which was more edgy and violent. He rapped about drugs, sex, violence, rape, and murder under the pseudonym Slim Shady. He recorded “the Slim Shady EP” in the spring of 1997, and Web Entertainment published it the following winter.

Dr. Dre’s Meeting

The Source magazine’s unsigned hype column featured Eminem in March 1998. He was evicted from his house not long after, and he chose to compete in the Rap Olympics in Los Angeles. He came in second place, but an Interscope Records employee was so taken with what he heard that he forwarded The Slim Shady EP to company CEO Jimmy Iovine.

Dr. Dre had just formed his own label, Aftermath Records, and was seeking for new talent to sign. Jimmy Iovine played the record for him. Dre would subsequently say of his immediate reaction to Eminem’s demo:

“What the fuck!? and who the heck is that, I thought to myself. I’ve never found anything from a demo tape or a CD in my whole career in the music business. ‘Find him. Now,’ I said Jimmy when he played this.”

After being identified, Eminem soon signed a deal with Aftermath Entertainment to re-record and polish The Slim Shady EP, with Dre serving as Executive Producer.

The record was a critical and financial success right away. It went 4X Platinum in the United States alone, earning Eminem a Grammy for the best rap album.
