According to a source close to the dress, Kim Kardashian appears to have irreversibly destroyed it after wearing it to the 2022 Met Gala.
When Michael Morrissette, a visual artist who curates museum and costume displays, saw the outfit on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles on Sunday, he says he noticed irreparable damage to it. Morrissette claims he handled the dress in 2016 when it was shown for Julien’s Auctions, where it was purchased for $4.8 million by Ripley’s.
Morrissette claims the dress now has a torn zipper
It shredded fabric from the hooks, stresses on the shoulder straps, and is missing beads and sequins as a result of Kardashian wearing it up the Met Gala steps.
Morrissette snapped images of the gown on Sunday, which he shared with Monroe memorabilia collector Scott Fortner, who re-posted them on Instagram to show how the gown appeared before Kardashian wore it.

Monroe wore it while singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962, and it became part of American history.

Kim Kardashian irrevocably destroyed a classic Marilyn Monroe gown after wearing it at the Met Gala in 2022. Kardashian wore it to the Met Gala sixty years later, thanks to a collaboration with Ripley’s. Vogue reports that she only wore the garment for a few minutes before changing it into a duplicate to avoid damaging the original.
“I’m a huge fan of the outfit and what it represents in American history.” I’d never want to sit in it, dine in it, or risk any damage to it, and I won’t be using the kind of body cosmetics I usually do,” Kardashian said at the time to Vogue. “Everything had to be timed perfectly, and I had to rehearse walking up the stairwell.”
“Great care was taken to preserve this piece of pop culture history,” Ripley’s said on Instagram in May, adding that “the quality of the outfit was first priority.”

Morrissette, on the other hand, believes that any textile specialist would agree that the dress should have never been worn in the first place.
“Everything you do ruins 60-year-old material, cloth, thread, and sequins. It is harmed every time you show it “he exclaims “It irritates me so much when someone has the arrogance to put it on and stroll up the stairs in it.”
Morrissette, a Monroe lover who owns several of her classic gowns, says he was moved to tears when he saw the “Happy Birthday” gown in its current state.
“My heart has been torn apart. I had to fight back tears as I walked out of Ripley’s “he exclaims “I’m shocked Marilyn’s gown is ruined.”
“For the rest of our history, this is the clothing we’ll have to look at,” he continues. “Kim, you basically wrecked the world’s most costly outfit.”
