The Raiders’ head coaching situation over the past few years has been quite dynamic. They began the 2021 season with Jon Gruden in his fourth year as head coach, but he resigned midway through the year after he was caught up in an email scandal in which he used homophobic slurs and other offensive languages.
From there, Rich Bisaccia took charge of the Raiders and guided them to a 7-5 record and a spot in the playoffs. Bisaccia was the Raiders’ special teams coordinator before they were eliminated by the Bengals in the wild-card round, and he is now working for the Green Bay Packers.
The Raiders were thus put in a difficult position. A team in the playoffs without a head coach and with a quarterback entering a contract year.
It didn’t take long for the Raiders to get to work. After over a year with the Broncos, they hired Josh McDaniels, the Patriots offensive coordinator, at the end of January. McDaniels has led the team to a 1-3 start, but to his credit, the Raiders are third in the NFL in yards per game at 385, behind only the Chiefs and the Bills.
The Raiders’ Decision to Hire Josh Mc Daniels and Why
Choosing McDaniels was definitely a novel move on the part of Vegas. Given the franchise’s trajectory, the decision to hire a coaching retread was puzzling. This was especially true considering the Patriots’ checkered past with coordinators who were promoted to head coaching positions.
When McDaniels was introduced as the team’s new head coach, he said, “I understand the vision that they have in mind.” Seeing where this company is going excites me, and I’m glad to be a part of it.
For the most part, it appeared that Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler was favoring familiar faces. In 2010, Ziegler was the player personnel assistant in Denver, where the two of them worked together. Prior to his position as general manager for the Raiders, Ziegler held a variety of personnel roles with the Patriots from 2013 to 2021.
That is to say, Ziegler would have known McDaniels very well, making his decision to hire a Patriots player a logical one.
