The majority of tricky situations that celebrities who have appeared on director Karan Johar’s Koffee with Karan have encountered were brought on by comments they made on the programme. The chat show, which debuted in 2004, has travelled a long way from television to OTT, and as more rumours and gossip have been swirled around each episode over time, its fan base has gotten larger.
As viewers prepare to watch their favourite celebrities open up on Koffee with Karan in Season 7, which premieres on Disney+ Hotstar on July 7, here is a look at some of the episodes’ most contentious moments.
Cricketers Hardik Pandya and Kl Rahul Have Been Suspended (season 6, Episode 12)
Cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul from the team India were guests on the show’s 12th episode of Season 6 in 2019. The two young cricketers ended up talking indecently about women and their sex life after getting carried away in their discourse.
Following their comments, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) placed the cricketers on a temporary suspension. Disney+Hotstar later took the episode down from their platform as well.
Kangana Ranaut’s Slam on Karan for Being a Nepotist (season 5, Episode 16)
During her second visit to the programme, the Tanu Weds Manu actress made the decision to criticise Karan for promoting nepotism in Bollywood. She referred to the director of Student of the Year as the “flag-bearer of nepotism.” Saif Ali Khan, who was also a guest on the show with Kangana, sat through the programme with discomfort as the actress and the filmmaker spat insults. Kangana labelled Karan “snooty” as he made fun of her accent. The two do not appear to agree with each other anymore since the episode.
The Prevalent Ignorance of Alia Bhatt (season 4, Episode 5)
In 2013, Karan welcomed the youthful stars of his movie Student of the Year to promote it. After giving a wrong response during one of the quiz portions, Alia Bhatt’s appearance on the programme took a bad turn.
“Prithviraj Chauhan,” Alia said when asked who India’s president was (instead of Pranab Mukherjee). For the error, Alia received harsh trolling.
Harsh Criticism of An Actor’s Appearance and Acting Abilities from Sonam Kapoor (season 4, Episode 18)
Since her appearance on Koffee with Karan in Season 3, Sonam Kapoor has gained a reputation for making crude remarks about a variety of people, including actor Ranbir Kapoor and author Shobhaa De. The only time Sonam was seen criticising other actors was during her father Anil Kapoor’s presence in Season 4. “If you aren’t attractive, people will consider you to be an excellent actor. You’re not a good actress just because you speak loudly and have an ordinary appearance, Sonam had said.
Bitterness Over Her Split from Ranbir Kapoor Is Evident in Deepika Padukone (season 3, Episode 3)
While Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor appear to have blissfully moved on with their separate life partners, the Piku actress once harboured grudges against her boyfriend. Prior to Deepika’s 2010 debut on Koffee with Karan, the two had been dating for about two years before breaking up a few months earlier.
When asked what her ex-partner ought to promote, Deepika responded, “condom brand.” When asked to assess a number of stars on their sex appeal, Ranbir received the lowest ranking from the woman.
Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor Discuss Bogus Remarks (season 3, Episodes 5 & 7)
Kareena Kapoor Khan and Priyanka Chopra were the guests on Koffee with Karan’s Season 6 finale. To put an end to the uproar the two actresses had caused throughout Season 3 of the show, this was done. Along with Saif Ali Khan, Kareena had made fun of Priyanka for using a phoney accent.
In a later episode, Priyanka shot back at Kareena by claiming that she acquired her accent from the same source as Saif, the then-boyfriend of the Jab We Met star.
Anushka Sharma Felt Uneasy After Hearing Ranveer Singh’s Comment (season 3, Episode 16)
On Koffee with Karan, Ranveer Singh has consistently been one of the most fascinating celebs to watch. His bizarre behaviour and remarks mainly make the show more interesting. Anushka Sharma, a co-star in Season 3, took exception to his statements.
He joked that he would be there for Anushka if she wanted her bottom squeezed. She responded by urging Ranveer to stop talking to her in that way after being caught off guard by this from his Band Baaja Baaraat co-star. It did not look well for him when he said of Kareena in a bathing suit, “I went from child to boy.” It was his first talk show, therefore he later acknowledged that he got carried away with his remarks.
