On December 12, 2015, at UFC 194, Rockhold went up against Chris Weidman for the UFC Middleweight Championship.
He beat Weidman in the fourth round with a technical knockout. After two rounds of close competition, Rockhold took advantage of a missed wheel kick by Weidman and put him in the back mount. He then moved to full mount and gave the champion a lot of ground and pound. Weidman made it to the end of the round, but Rockhold’s ground and pound left him with many cuts and bruises. In the fourth round, Rockhold kept throwing punches and got a takedown.
After getting into full mount, he used more ground and pound to win the fight by TKO. He became the seventh middleweight champion in UFC history and ended Weidman’s unbeaten streak in the UFC. Both fighters won the Fight of the Night award. In the interview after the fight, Rockhold talked about how he had been fighting a staph infection and taking antibiotics, which made him tired in the later rounds of the fight, but he was still able to win.
