$10.75 Million Has Been Earned by An Animated Film Since the Onset of The Pandemic.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, no animated film has performed better in previews than the $10.75 million grossing picture for which it was intended. The film has only played in 3,350 theatres so far, but it’s expected to expand to 4,391 on Friday. Because of the Fourth of July holiday, it’s likely that the film will open to between $65 million and $75 million more than its current projections suggest.
There has never been an animated series that made as much money as Despicable Me without inflation. Only Despicable Me: The Second Movie’s $56 million hauls in 2010 will be better than Minions: The Rise of Gru’s projected $54 million hauls in 2015.
In the Midst of The Pandemic, the Rise of Gru Has Had the Biggest Opening Day.
According to current circumstances, however, if The Rise of Gru is considered, it has beaten both Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Lightyear, both of which grossed $6.25 million and $5.2 million respectively. However, with $72.1 million in its first weekend, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has the best opening weekend for an animated film in since March of 2020.
Before the Minions arrived in 2015, Despicable Me 2 opened with $84 million in ticket sales, which is less than half of what other Despicable I titles have earned in their opening weekends. Despicable Me 3 debuted in 2017 with $72.4 million in box office revenue.
