James met brothers Glen and Les Charles while working for MTM Enterprises. Jimmy was hired to direct 76 episodes of Taxi, which the Charles brothers were producing at the time.

A one-bedroom condo in New York City cost James and Debbie $4.2 million in 2015. They offered $6.75 million for the apartment in 2017.
They bought a 13,000 square-foot magnificent property in LA’s Bel Air neighborhood for $12 million in 2004. The land is 4.5 acres in size. In 2011, they sold a 250-acre farm in Millbrook, New York for $15 million. They own TWO properties in the highly-exclusive Wellington Community in Florida, an equestrian community that has Bill Gates among its neighbors.
A property in Laguna Beach, California, cost James and Debbie $15 million in 2021. They also bought a $3.3 million home in La Quinta, California, at the same time they bought the Laguna home.
