LuPone began her professional career in 1972 with The Acting Company, and her Broadway debut was in 1973 with Three Sisters. For The Robber Bridegroom, a 1975 musical, she won the first of eight Tony Award nominations. For her performance as Eva Perón in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita on Broadway in 1979, she received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
She won the 1985 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her roles as Fantine in the original London production of Les Misérables and Moll in The Cradle Will Rock. She earned a second Tony Award in 2008 for her performance as Rose in the Broadway revival of Gypsy, and a second Olivier Award in 2019 for her performance as Joanne in Stephen Sondheim’s Company in the West End revival.
