Early Life

David Wayne Spade was born on July 22, 1964, in Birmingham, Michigan, the son of Judith and Warne Spade, to whom he is married. Andy and Bryan are his brothers. Spade’s parents split shortly after moving to Scottsdale, Arizona, when Spade was only four years old. Their mother was the primary caregiver for the boys, who were brought up in a state of relative poverty.

Prior to entering ASU, David attended Scottsdale Community College and Saguaro High School. He received a business degree in 1986 and was a member of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. As a student, Spade was a regular at the university’s Farce Side Comedy Hour sketch comedy program. He also performed stand-up at Greasy Tony’s Pizza in Tempe, AZ, when he was in college.

Career

As of 1990, David Spade was a regular cast member of ‘Saturday Night Live‘ as a writer and a contributor to the program. His performance on SNL earned him a lot of respect in the business and he stayed there until 1996.

In 1995, he co-starred in the comedy “Tommy Boy” with Chris Farley, a fellow ‘Saturday Night Live cast member. ‘Black Sheep’ was another comedic picture in which he and Chris Farley featured together.

The character of Joe Dirt appeared in another comedy film in 2001, and he starred in Capital One ads from 2002 to 2006.

For six seasons from 2007 to 2013, he played Russell Dunbar in the comedy Rules of Engagement.

In 2010 he starred in the film ‘Grown Ups’ starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, and Rob Schneider as Marcus Higgins, a character he created. In 2013, he makes a cameo appearance in ‘Grown Ups 2′.

In spite of the lackluster critical reception, the films sailed to success at the box office and became cult favorites among SNL fans. The actor’s inability to attend Farley’s burial after the actor died of a drug overdose in 1997 sparked speculations that he and the late actor had a falling out. In many interviews, Spade has indicated that seeing his close buddy “in a box” was emotionally too much for him to bear.

David made an average of $150,000 every episode during the first several seasons of “Just Shoot Me! “. His compensation was increased to $300,000 per episode before the sixth season. A total of 480 hours of community service were assigned to him as part of his sentence.

In December 2005, Spade gave $100,000 to the Phoenix police department. The tornado victims in Oklahoma received his donation of $200,000 in May of that year. In 2014, he donated $100,000 to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and another $100,000 to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, after the terrible death of his sister-in-law.
