After being forced to miss his senior college baseball season due to a visit to the Buccaneers team facilities, he refused to play for them again. When he was told by the Buccaneers that the visit was approved by the NCAA, he was disqualified from participating in college sports.
When the Buccaneers were denied NCAA approval, he believes that they did so to force him into playing professional football instead of baseball. Consequently, he refused to sign with them and instead chose to play professional baseball for the Kansas City Royals, who had drafted him in the amateur draught the year before, back in 1986.
The three-year deal with a $1.07 million salary with the Kansas City Royals’ Class AA affiliate, the Memphis Chicks; 53 games played. In September 1986, he was called up to the majors and made the roster of the Kansas City Royals for the following year. With an $8.15 million performance-based bonus at the end of his three-year contract, the Chicago White Sox signed him after the Royals released him due to his injury in 1991. With the White Sox, Jackson played two seasons, in 1991 and 1993; in 1992, he underwent hip replacement surgery and was placed on the disabled list; he returned in 1993.
