In September 1986, he was called up to the majors and made the roster of the Kansas City Royals for the following year. With an $8.15 million performance-based bonus at the end of his three-year contract, the Chicago White Sox signed him after the Royals released him due to his injury in 1991. With the White Sox, Jackson played two seasons, in 1991 and 1993; in 1992, he underwent hip replacement surgery and was placed on the disabled list; he returned in 1993.
